The Junior Irish Open, held on March 1st, showcased Ireland’s most promising young racquetball players, with thrilling matches across all age groups. The event highlighted the depth of talent in junior racquetball, as players battled for top honors and displayed exceptional sportsmanship. Standout Performances Across the Divisions The tournament featured intense competition, with Conor Buggy** securing the U9 Boys’ gold, while Sophie Kehoe claimed victory in the U11 Girls’ division. In the U11 Boys' category, Jack O’Brien emerged as champion, fending off strong challenges from his competitors. In the U13 divisions, Eva Horgan and James Byrne took home gold in the girls’ and boys’ competitions, respectively. The U15 categories saw Sophie O’Flynn and Ryan Lawlor claim the top spots, showcasing their skill and determination. The U17 divisions featured some of the day’s most competitive matches. Megan Coleman secured the U17 Girls’ gold, while Joseph Farrell triumphed in the U17 Boys’ final. Sportsmanship and Determination The Plate competitions provided another opportunity for players to display their resilience. Naoise Higgins (U11 Girls), David Fitzgerald (U11 Boys), Libby Cowman (U13 Girls), Charlie Walsh (U13 Boys), Darragh O’Callaghan (U15 Boys), Niamh Murphy (U17 Girls), and Jack Carroll (U17 Boys) all emerged victorious in their respective categories. A special highlight of the tournament was the Sportsperson of the Tournament award, which was presented to Diarmuid Ryan of Ballyanne for his outstanding attitude, respect, and commitment to the game. Finally the prestigious Aisling Hynes Memorial Cup was once again presented to the club who accumulated the most points through final standings in the competition. We would like to congratulate Fermoy Racquetball Club on retaining the cup for the third year running, pulling ahead with 6 points over second place Ballyanne. Well done Fermoy !
