Sean Gargan
Contributor (Kingscourt) There are not many people in any sport who can claim to have brought two World Championships to their home club and town, but for Sean Gargan this is true. In 2008. when the European Racquetball Federation failed to secure Paris for the WorldRacquetball Championships Sean stepped in and proposed Kingscourt as an alternative venueto host the Championships. Twenty-eight countries and over 200 athletes were welcomed toKingscourt in August 2008. It was a major success for all three federations, InternationalRacquetball Federation, European Racquetball Federation and the Racquetball Association of Ireland. Not content with just one world Championships, Sean and Kingscourt also hosted the World Seniors Doubles Championships in 2010. While not as large as the 2008 event, it was just assuccessful with athletes from Europe , and North, South and Central America competing. Those two major achievements did not just define Sean's abilities, he was also President of the Racquetball Association of Ireland from 2007 – 2009. He has been actively involved in junior coaching over the years and coached Irish Junior teams at two World Junior Championships in the USA. He has been involved in administration from a very young age and can relay the story of how he became Secretary of Kingscourt Handball Club at the age of 15! Sean is still very involved in racquetball as an administrator, he is Chairman of Kingscourt Racquetball Club, and Tournament Director for the annual Kingscourt & Ulster Open racquetball tournament. It gives us great pleasure to welcome Sean into the Association Hall of Fame. |
Pat Keane
Contributor (Tournaneena) We have the privilege to induct a proud Waterford man to the Racquetball Association of Ireland’s Hall of Fame. The honour goes to Pat Keane from Tournaneena and becomes our 14th Hall of Fame inductee. Pat is a past President of the Association and served in the role from 2005 to 2007 but before that Pat took on different positions in the Association as PRO and National Junior Team Coach. It was Pat with another Hall of Fame recipient Christy Slattery that led our first national junior teams to the World Junior Championships. But while busy as a coach, Pat excelled in the role of PRO, introducing a monthly printed newsletter to clubs, finding radio stations and national newspapers to cover our sport. He is also credited in getting RTE television to cover the All-Ireland Championships in 2007? in Kingscourt. Pat was also an accomplished player, reached the B Grade and played and competed in Open tournaments nationwide. Always at heart for Pat was junior athletes and his helpful way to encourage them and improve their skills in the sport. The number of players coached by Pat and still playing presently is testament to Pat’s ability as a coach. Pat was always at hand to help our juniors and other players in other ways than jusr racquetball. The need for this help arose urgently in Santo Domingo at the 2009 World Junior Championships. The hotel room of two of our juniors was invaded by a mouse and after a call to Pat by the terrified juniors, the invader was dispatched by Pat in double quick time. We extend our appreciation to Pat for his service to Irish Racquetball. |
